Perched on a bluff overlooking scenic Bayou Liberty,
the Salmen House (above) was recently placed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Situated on scenic Bayou Liberty in Slidell, Louisiana, Camp Salmen served as the primary Boy Scout summer camp of the New Orleans Metro area for nearly sixty years (1924-1980). The park is composed of 106 acres of pristine cypress swamp and mixed bottomland hardwood forest which provides habitat for a vast array of local fauna and flora. Recently, St. Tammany Parish purchased the site to preserve and recreate the unique historical, cultural, and biological heritage of our region.
Currently, our staff is devising a management strategy to develop the park into a viable public facility. The plan is to convert Camp Salmen into an instructional nature preserve and provide educational programs by forming a partnership with the St. Tammany Parish School Board.
We are requesting anyone who has relevant historical, cultural, or Boy Scout related information to please contact Brett Henry at (985) 898-2535. All pictures, stories, and literature are welcome and will help make up the historical content of this site.
Yours truly,
Kevin Davis
Parish President
