SALAD DAYS 2007 CALL TO ARTISTS: The competition is open to artists between the ages of 5-19, but college students are not eligible. A prospectus with complete entry details, rules and an entry form is available at the Slidell Cultural Center currently located at 1827 Front St (on the second floor of the train depot) or online at the city’s website, www.slidell.la.us, under the City Departments/Cultural & Public Affairs. ESSENCE MARKETPLACE is accepting applications for fine arts and crafts for the Essence Music Festival “Coming Home” that will be held in New Orleans on July 5, 6 and 7, 2007. Deadline for entries is March 28, 2007. For more information visit the webpage at www.Essence.com.

CONGRESSIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ART COMPETITION: Congressman Bobby Jindal’s office announces a national competition whose theme is “An Artistic Discovery.” Each school will be allowed to submit one entry from a student in grades 9-12. The winner’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Official guidelines will be sent out as soon as they are released by the U. CLASSES, TRAINING, WEBLINKS, ETC…

MARCH CLASSES AT THE PARENTING CENTER: The Parenting Center of St. Tammany Parish Hospital offers a variety of classes for the month of March. Pre-K@Play, Play Pals, Toddlin’ Time, and Creative Movement are all offered. For a complete list of dates and times please call 985-989-4435 or visit www.stph.org.

NOCCA MIDDLE SCHOOL CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM: Workshops will provide training for students who have a passion for creative writing and the arts. Classes will be held Saturdays at the Creative Writing Department, NOCCA/Riverfront, 2800 Chartres St., New Orleans and are open for students currently enrolled in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades. Space is limited. A one-time $5 supply fee will be collected for the first day of class.

NOCCA THEATRE DESIGN WORKSHOP: Students will learn about various aspects of theatre design including scenery, props, lights and costumes construction. Class schedule will be Saturdays, March 31, April 14 & 21, 10am-12:30pm at NOCCA/Riverfront, 2800 Chartres St., New Orleans. Workshop fee is $10 and space is limited. Recommended confirmation is by March 15. For more info or to request an application, call 504-940-2854 or visit www.nocca.com.

NOCCA PIANO PREP: The Piano Preparatory Program at NOCCA /Riverfront is taking applications for the 2007-08 Program. This program is designed to nurture musical interest of young students, K–3 grade. Application deadline is May 1, 2007. Interested families should visit www.nocca.com

NOCCA MEDIA ARTS SUMMER PROGRAM: Interested high school students who would like to receive hands-on training in filmmaking, record producing and digital editing are encouraged to mail-in a NOCCA/Riverfront application as the department is still accepting application for spring auditions for the June summer session. Students may find the application a www.nocca.com or by calling 504-940-2854. Also, call if you would like to visit the department to see first hand other high school students learning the profession.

ST. TAMMANY ART ASSOCIATION IS NOW TAKING ENROLLMENT FOR KIDS SPRING AND SUMMER CAMPS: In addition, STAA also offers a full slate of after-school, evening and weekend arts education for children, teens and adults. Beginners and experienced artists alike can choose from studio art classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, or printmaking, art history, or performance education in acting and voice. Children’s classes start at age 5 up to age 14, with adult classes starting at 15 or 18. Details are available by calling 985-892-8650 or emailing stassn@bellsouth.net. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES...

2007 AT&T EXCELERATOR GRANT PROGRAM will provide $9 million in competitive technology grants to help local nonprofit organizations integrate technology into their operations and community outreach. This program helps nonprofit organizations better serve their communities by improving technology and providing fund resources such as Internet access and computer training to assist organizations with various programs, many aimed to increase educational learning and job skills development. Deadline May 4, 2007. More information is available online at www.att.com/gen/corporate-citizenship?pid=7745.

THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL AND FOUNDATION will make a major investment in local arts and education by distributing $250,000 through the Foundation’s Community Partnership Grants program. Grant applications are due by April 17 and awards will be announced on May 14. The Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations, individuals and organizations that do not have 501(c)(3) status and commercial enterprises, so long as their proposed projects are in keeping with the Foundations mission “to promote, preserve and perpetuate the music, arts, culture and heritage of communities in Louisiana through festivals, programs and other educational, civic and economic activities.” Applications and guidelines are available from the Foundation office, located at 1205 N. TWO NEW PROGRAMS WERE INTRODUCED THIS WEEK BY THE LOUISIANA RECOVERY AUTHORITY. The Louisiana Speaks Regional Vision Poll, is an opportunity for Louisiana residents to provide feedback on recovery related issues. According to the LRA, the results will be used to help set spending and policy priorities http://vision.louisianaspeaks.org/ . The second, the Small Business Retention Program, is offering grants and low/no interest loans to eligible small businesses and nonprofits www.louisianaforward.com. GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ARTS: Congressman Bobby Jindal is pleased to announce the availability of Arts Endowment grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to qualified non-profit arts organizations. The NEA is a federal agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, bringing the arts to all Americans and providing leadership in art education. For more information, please visit the NEA website at www.arts.gov/grants or contact the NEA at 202-682-5400.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS ANNOUNCES THE BIG READ: The purpose is to encourage literary reading. Grants ranging from $5,000 - $20,000 are available to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture. Organizations selected to participate will receive a grant, financial support to attend a national orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials for broad distribute. Go to www.NEABigRead.org to download the Request for Proposals.

THE LOUISIANA CULTURAL ECONOMY FOUNDATION supports Louisiana’s cultural industries. The Foundation now has relief grants available to fund losses sustained as a result of Hurricanes Katrina & Rita.
